In Plain English: How In a Moon Works

(updated March 9, 2026)

This page explains how In a Moon works in plain language. It is intended to help people understand the system.

Why We Made In a Moon

Much of the internet runs on invisible work. People write software, publish research, create art, answer questions, maintain projects, and share ideas that others rely on every day.

Yet most systems on the web are designed to reward attention rather than contribution. Likes, views, and algorithms often amplify what is loud or viral rather than what is useful or meaningful.

In a Moon was created to explore a different feedback loop -- one where recognition flows back toward the people who create and maintain the things we value.

Our system records simple signals of appreciation, called kudos, and processes them over time to understand where recognition is accumulating across the web.

Our goal is to make it easier for people to acknowledge the creators, builders, and thinkers whose work shapes the internet -- and to experiment with new ways that recognition can translate into support.

What In a Moon Does

In a Moon lets people recognize and support creators across the open web.

When you send kudos, you are recording an acknowledgment of appreciation for a creator, project, or public identity. These acknowledgments accumulate over time and help the system understand which people and ideas matter to you.

What Kudos Are

Kudos are signals of recognition.

They are not cryptocurrency, securities, or tradable tokens. They cannot be transferred between users.

In some cases, verified contributors may be eligible to convert accumulated recognition into credits or payments through programs operated by the Company. Participation in those programs is optional and subject to eligibility rules.

How Attribution Works

In a Moon processes kudos and other attribution signals using internal systems designed to measure recognition across the web.

These systems may apply weighting, filtering, or other safeguards to prevent abuse and maintain the integrity of the network.

Not every signal results in promotion, visibility, or payout. The system determines outcomes based on technical rules and operational policies.

The Browser Extension

The In a Moon extension helps identify public identities on the pages you visit so you can send kudos easily.

Page analysis happens locally on your device. The extension does not store or transmit your browsing history or a list of the pages you visit.

Information is only sent to our servers when you choose to take an action, such as signing in or sending kudos. When you use our browser extension and other apps kudos can be sent automatically for you as you browse.

What Information We Collect

If you create an account, we collect basic information such as your email address and authentication identifiers so we can operate your account.

When you send kudos, we record attribution events such as the identity you recognized and the time the action occurred. We use emojis to allow you to add extra information to the kudos.

We also collect limited technical information necessary to operate the service, such as security logs and basic usage events.

What We Do Not Do

We do not sell personal data.

We do not track your browsing history.

We do not operate advertising networks.

The Open Web

In a Moon works with the open web.

Many identities referenced through the system exist on external platforms such as code repositories, social networks, and websites that we do not control.

Those platforms operate independently and have their own policies.

Moderation and Visibility

We may review or limit the visibility of content, identities, or accounts that violate our policies, applicable law, or the safety of the service.

This may include excluding certain identities from discovery, search results, or payout programs.

Account Control

You can request deletion of your account and associated data through the account management interface or by contacting us.

Some information may be retained where required for security, fraud prevention, or legal compliance.
